Trending Baby Names in America: What's Hot Right Now

The name Liam continues to be very popular in the United States. It was the most popular name for baby boys in both 2022 and 2023, according to the annual list of popular baby names published by the SSA. This list is compiled based on Social Security card applications since 1997, reflecting how popular culture influences naming trends. Some parents may have chosen the name Liam for their children because of celebrities like Liam Hemsworth or Liam Payne from One Direction.

This marks the seventh consecutive year that Liam has come in first place. Olivia has been the most popular girl's name for the past five years, taking over from Emma who is now in second place, just like last year. Charlotte is in third place, followed by Amelia and Sophia. For boys, Liam (who was ranked 104th in 2005) is followed by Noah, Oliver, James, and Elijah. It appears that the success of the TV show Andor, part of the Star Wars franchise, has had an impact on new parents' choices of names. The character Cassian, played by Diego Luna, has seen a significant rise in popularity, moving from 936th to 533rd place on the Social Security list. In addition, names like Izael, Chozen, and Elio have also become more popular in the past year. The trend of choosing classic names spelled backwards, such as Semaj (James), is also on the rise, as well as a preference for names with biblical origins.

Eiden, Kyren, and Kaizen are some boys' names that have become more popular. On the other hand, for girls, names like Kaeli, Alitzel, Emryn, Adhara, and Azari are gaining popularity, reflecting a trend towards unique names. Conversely, the names Dior, Maxtor, Davian, Heath, and Braden have decreased in popularity for boys, as well as Addilynn, India, Madisyn, Chanel, and Averi for girls.

According to the latest SSA data, 3.65 million Social Security cards were issued in the previous year. The U.S. government emphasizes the importance of obtaining a child's Social Security number as a key measure to ensure their future benefits are protected. A child's Social Security number is required for various purposes including listing them as dependents on tax returns, opening a bank account, purchasing savings bonds, accessing medical coverage, or applying for government services.
